Getting ready for the weekend

Saturday marks the beginning of the 39th Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. I can't wait! I just LOVE Fiesta! Even though we see the same balloons every year, it is my absolute favorite thing about Albuquerque! So many colors and it is truly an amazing sight to behold in person. Everyone should try to see it, in my opinion at least. Hey, we have a sleeper sofa so we can accommodate some people. :) I don't even mind getting up at 4 AM just to see the 7 AM launch.

This year Kate is excited about Fiesta. We have been looking at past pictures and reading Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon book. It helps that she has the official balloon poster in her room from 2008. Kate has already learned so much about balloons that it was fitting that we head to the Balloon Museum. She likes to talk about the fire that heats the air and the "balloon goes up, up, up in the air!"At the museum there is an exhibit where you have to press a button to heat the air in the balloon envelope. You get to choose how high you heat the air before you launch the balloon. Kate loved it, and we did it several times. She thought it was cool that she made the balloon rise and funny when it came down and bounced.
Kate also enjoyed watching last year's fiesta video that the museum was showing. She was memorized and squealed when she saw certain shapes. Kate liked the hands on exhibits especially checking to see if the balloon material was strong enough to withstand the weigh it would be under in the air. There were a few baskets that she could stand in but she refused. I think she thought if she went in, she would go in the air and it scared her. She wouldn't even pose for a picture in the balloon basket that was bolted to the floor. Oh well. She was thrilled to see different balloons though. Her reaction when we walked in the priceless. :) "Hot Air Ballooooons!!!"One of her other favorite things was the quilting squares. OK, only one really caught her attention. It was about space and has a space shuttle on it. She also pointed out the astronaut and rockets. Yes, if she could have, she would have been wearing her space shuttle shirt today, tomorrow and the day after that. Our girl loves things that fly!Tomorrow we will make hot air balloon cookies with our new cookie cutter. :) What a yummy, sugary way to spend the morning. :) Yes, this year's Fiesta should be fun! We can't wait to see the bright colors and spend time together and with extended family! :)
