Every day Kate amazes me! The works she brings home from school and does at home fills me with such overwhelming pride and joy! I often forget that she is not even 5 (but will be in a month!) when she brings home work that is meant for 1st and sometimes 2nd graders. Even her teachers are amazed!
This past week, the teachers removed the abacus during math and now they want the kids to use their fingers for addition and subtraction problems. On the day it started, Miss Marissa told me that she had to tell Kate to stay quiet during the math problems. In her small group, she was adding/subtracting so quickly that she beat everyone else and was giving away the answers! Kate said it was "just too easy."
In early February, I bought Kate a writing journal that was made for 2nd graders. it is half lines and half blank. Around valentine's day we did a science experiment. Much like the kids on Sid the science Kid, Kate drew her observations, but then she wrote (with spelling help from me) what she observed. After 6 days (4 entries), she was adding a lot of detail to her writing and drawings. She loved it so much we had to do 2 more experiments.
She used her journal while in Huntsville for her homework and daily journal.
Earlier this month, she decided to grab paper from the closet and proceeded to draw and write her own story. She sounded it out and wrote what she could. I didn't even know that she was doing it until she was finished.
Now she brings home stories from school. I was shocked when she brought home this on Tuesday. She wrote it all on her own!
Wednesday she did it again!
For St. Patrick's day, the kids made traps for the leprechauns many kids put the glittery stickers on the outside of the box, but her teacher told me, "Kate is the only one who insisted that the stickers go on the inside only." Of course, it lures the leprechaun in! That same day, we had to make a trap here. She decided on the big blocks and set her jewelry out as bait. It was a nice leprechaun and didn't steal her shiny things but left more shiny stuff! She also told me "If leprechauns were as small as cells...."
She is a quick thinkers. Today we saw the Easter Bunny. After we left she asked "Why didn't the Easter Bunny have a voice?" I never even considered it until she said something! Of course they don't talk because it's a person and their voice would be muffled and the mouth doesn't move. But I didn't say anything. As daddy pointed out tonight, it is an animal and animals don't talk. She didn't buy it. (Too many Disney movies with talking animals!) she just couldn't figure out why it wouldn't speak to her.
Oh I love this girl and she amazes me more and more every day! I hope she reads these messages in the future and understands just how proud of her I am because I know she doesn't grasp it when I tell her. I just tear up with pride at all she has already accomplished in her life!
