Trip to the Pecos

The Thursday before the 4th of July , Chris took the day off so we could drive up to the mountains. We have a favorite spot we always go to. We picked up a few items from the store for a picnic and headed north.

Our first stop was the fish hatchery. We saw the small fish in the hatchery buildings and then went outside where Kate enthusiastically fed the big fish!

The weather was perfect and it wasn't crowded yet. (The trailers were arriving when we headed home.) We found a good place to set up our picnic. Kate was more interested in exploring the area than eating.
Kate insisted on carrying something so we gave her the trash bag. I think it took 20 minutes to get from the picnic site to the trash can since she had to stop bang the bag on the ground and occasionally stop to play in the dirt path. :)
After picking up after ourselves, we changed into our hiking clothes and headed to the trail.
It follows a stream for awhile. Kate loves the water. A few feet off the path we came across an inlet and we stayed there for nearly an hour. Kate enjoyed playing in the water. She loved the sand/gravel. She decided she needed her shoes off to feel it between her toes. We tossed rocks into the stream, and she loved the "kerplop."After that we headed back to the car and headed home. We stopped at DQ for dinner and ice cream. Kate did great despite missing her normal nap. She fell asleep for about 30 minutes in the car. I think she enjoyed her first trip to the mountains. Sitting by the water for so long sure made me relaxed. I think Chris and I agreed that next time we will have to stay overnight. It's a lot of work getting a toddler (and her mommy) ready for the mountains!!
